Overview
This practical one- or two-day workshop takes participants through each stage of the recruitment and selection process.
The course is tailored to the organisation’s own procedures and gives participants the opportunity to develop and practise the skills needed to recruit fairly, objectively and effectively. It covers role profiles, shortlisting, interview preparation, questioning techniques, assessment, scoring and candidate feedback.
Where required, the workshop can also include mock interviews using staff volunteers or professional actor-coaches.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will:
- understand how the recruitment and selection process operates within their organisation;
- recognise their role and responsibilities at each stage of the process;
- understand the key legal considerations and how to avoid discrimination;
- be able to write or amend clear and fair role profiles, job descriptions and selection criteria;
- know how to shortlist candidates consistently and objectively;
- understand how other forms of assessment can support the selection process;
- be able to structure an effective interview;
- write clear interview questions and use appropriate probing techniques;
- have practised their interview skills through realistic mock interviews, where included;
- know how to take effective notes and maintain appropriate records;
- evaluate and score evidence consistently; and
- provide useful and constructive feedback to unsuccessful candidates.
Course Content
The course can include:
- the stages of recruitment and selection;
- fair and objective recruitment practice;
- equality, data protection and right-to-work responsibilities;
- role profiles, job descriptions and person specifications;
- shortlisting grids and scoring methods;
- alternative assessment methods;
- interview structure and preparation;
- questioning and probing techniques;
- note-taking and record-keeping;
- evaluating and scoring evidence; and
- providing feedback following shortlisting or interview.
Who Should Attend?
The workshop is suitable for managers, panel members and others involved in recruiting, shortlisting or interviewing candidates.
Mock Interviews
Mock interviews can be included using either staff volunteers or professional actor-coaches. Participants interview candidates in small panels and receive practical feedback on their questioning, listening and assessment skills.
