Preparing for Grade 7 in the Government Analytical Service: Maximising your effectiveness and impact


This course is for experienced members of the Government Analytical Service (GES, GSR, GSS, GORS and GO Science), who are responsible for managing staff and starting to have a representation role for in the Analytical Service. The aim of this course is to equip participants with many of the key skills needed to perform effectively at this level in the government analytical service. It is a highly engaging and intensive programme spread over 2 months, comprising of 2x2 day modules, each focusing on a different aspect of the skills required to attain high performance at this level. Each participant will receive personalised feedback on his or her impact and approach and coaching.

Course syllabus

The syllabus consists of the following two modules:

Module 1: Managing junior analysts 
Module 2: Presence, Impact & Negotiation Skills

Module 1: Managing junior analysts (2 days)

This 2-day launch module has a focus on the challenges of managing junior Analysts within the wider analytical environment.  Being able to harness potential from your team to maximise performance both as individual contributors and as a team with a common purpose.  The module explores key challenges in motivation and performance management, how to set Analysts up for considerations around engagement and motivation.  The programme is delivered in a highly interactive environment using case studies, discussion, facilitator input and practice with role players.  Each participant receives personal 121 coaching and feedback on their approach and leaves with an action plan specific to their team to implement and see results first hand.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the unique challenges and dynamics involved in managing junior analysts within an analytical environment.
  2. Develop strategies to maximise the potential of junior analysts as individual contributors and as a cohesive team with a shared purpose.
  3. Gain knowledge and techniques for effectively motivating and managing the performance of junior analysts.
  4. Learn how to set up junior analysts for success by considering their engagement and motivation factors.
  5. Acquire skills for fostering an interactive and engaging learning environment through the use of case studies, discussions, and facilitator input.
  6. Practice and receive personalised coaching and feedback on individual approaches to managing junior analysts, and develop an actionable plan to implement with their own teams.

Module 2: Presence, Impact & Negotiation Skills (2 days)

The focus of module 2 encourages the delegates to extend their focus beyond their teams to the skills needed to maximise their effectiveness in the wider analytical community.  Over 2 days the programme explores negotiating with contractors, getting a voice in the room when meeting Ministers and senior government officials and presenting and networking at events and conferences.  It is highly interactive with chances to practice new skills and techniques in a variety of settings and learn from both the course facilitators and each other.  The programme concludes with a chance to design their own tailored role-play and receive feedback on a live interaction that they need to have with a key stakeholder.

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of negotiation strategies and techniques when working with contractors in the analytical community.
  2. Acquire the skills and confidence to effectively present and network at events and conferences, maximising visibility and influence within the analytical community.
  3. Learn strategies for gaining a voice in high-level meetings with Ministers and senior government officials, ensuring active participation and contribution.
  4. Explore effective communication and influencing techniques to effectively engage with key stakeholders in the analytical community.
  5. Practice and refine skills through interactive sessions and role-plays, applying newly learned techniques in realistic scenarios.
  6. Receive personalised feedback and guidance on designing and conducting a tailored role-play for a live interaction with a key stakeholder, enabling practical application and skill development.
